How NanosTech develops and runs its process, with Manjot Gill, EIT: reading trends instead of single numbers, and learning from the runs that do not go as planned.

From Oil to Fuel ยท Part 4

At NanosTech, the lab and the pilot plant are not separate worlds. The process is developed, tested, and refined in the same facility, by the same team, so the people running the process understand the chemistry behind it, and the people developing the chemistry understand what the process is telling them. In Part 4 of NanosTech’s “From Oil to Fuel” series, Laboratory Plant Operator Manjot Gill, EIT, describes what that integration looks like in the day-to-day work of developing and running the process.

The piece explains why a single reading is rarely enough. Pressure, temperature profiles, gas compositions, hydrogen consumption, and mass balances are tracked as part of each campaign, and it is the trend across those readings, not any one number, that separates a real change from normal variation. When something does not fit the pattern, the practice is to bring the question to the catalyst scientists and characterization experts, and the explanation that comes out of that conversation carries into the next run.

It also looks at what a difficult run teaches. Sometimes conventional operating indicators stay stable while product quality quietly changes: viscosity increases, micro carbon residue climbs, and mass balances become harder to close. Product analytics can flag that shift earlier than operating data alone, and when the data tells contradictory stories, the team stops and investigates together rather than adjusting a parameter and carrying on. Every difficult run refines what gets monitored, how the data is read, and what questions get asked before the next campaign begins.
