Over the past two decades, technologies like pyrolysis and hydrothermal liquefaction turned waste streams that once had no use into oils that renewable fuel producers could actually work with. That problem has largely been solved at scale. In this LinkedIn post, NanosTech CEO Myles McGovern makes the case that solving it simply moved the industry’s real bottleneck downstream, from producing renewable oils to upgrading them into finished fuel.

The piece explains why that shift is happening now. Refining systems built over decades around fossil feedstocks perform best within a narrow chemical range, and renewable oils, often carrying meaningfully higher oxygen content, fall outside it. That mismatch, rather than any lack of ambition, is what’s pulling the industry’s attention toward catalyst chemistry built specifically for these feedstocks.
